Sunaina Gulzar Pulwama’s Pride in Kabaddi

Sunaina Gulzar, hailing from the small village of Putrigam in Pulwama district of South Kashmir, has emerged as one of the most inspiring faces of women’s kabaddi in Jammu & Kashmir. By becoming the first woman kabaddi player from Pulwama district, she has not only made history but also challenged long-standing social barriers in a male-dominated sport.

Her journey with kabaddi began in Class 6, when a simple interest gradually transformed into passion and discipline. Growing up with limited sports infrastructure and fewer opportunities for girls, Sunaina faced numerous challenges. However, instead of slowing her down, these obstacles strengthened her determination to succeed.

Through years of consistent training and dedication, Sunaina earned the honour of representing Jammu & Kashmir in seven National Kabaddi Championships. Her efforts were rewarded with a National Gold Medal, a proud achievement that established her as one of the region’s standout athletes.

A major turning point in her career came with her selection for the Kathua Darbar franchise in the Jammu & Kashmir Kabaddi League (JKKL). This milestone marked her entry into the Union Territory’s premier kabaddi competition and reflected her growing recognition at a professional level.

Beyond her sporting achievements, Sunaina’s journey has become a source of inspiration for many young girls in Pulwama. She credits her success to the unwavering support of her father, family, coaches, and mentors, whose guidance played a crucial role in her development. She also expresses heartfelt gratitude to Khalida Ma’am, a teacher whose encouragement during difficult times strengthened her confidence and belief in herself.

Today, Sunaina Gulzar stands not just as a successful athlete, but as a symbol of resilience, courage, and hope, inspiring young girls across Pulwama and Jammu & Kashmir to dream beyond limitations.
