India's ecosystem for electric vehicles (EV) and clean energy is undergoing a transformative period, fueled by robust government backing, growing private investments, and heightened consumer acceptance. Through substantial investments in electric vehicle production, charging facilities, battery innovation, and renewable energy initiatives, the nation is progressively advancing towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
The newly sanctioned Delhi EV Policy 2026, backed by an investment of around ₹15,000 crore, seeks to boost EV adoption through enhanced charging infrastructure, providing incentives, and fortifying the entire ecosystem. Concurrently, India is experiencing swift expansion in battery energy storage systems, an essential factor for the integration of renewable energy and grid stability. An SBI report indicates that a rise in EV adoption may enable India to save almost ₹1 lakh crore cumulatively over the four-year period of 2027–2030 if EVs capture a 20% market share, highlighting the economic and environmental advantages of this shift.
Market penetration of EVs in India
In the last ten years, India’s EV market has evolved from a niche segment to a crucial element of sustainable mobility, with EV registrations and sales increasing swiftly due to growing environmental awareness, fluctuating fuel prices, and favorable government initiatives; however, adoption still lags behind that of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This section details RQ1, the current situation of EVs in India, by analyzing market size, sales, and registration patterns across various segments, technology categories, and geographical trends, thus establishing a foundation for evaluating their contribution to the nation's sustainable development path.
In India, the rapid expansion of EVs is mainly fueled by government efforts, greater environmental consciousness, escalating fuel prices, and advancements in technology. Sales of electric vehicles in India have been on the rise, largely fueled by e-2W and e-3W sales. It rose from 95,198 units in 2017–18 to 1,670,736 units in 2023–24 (Fig. 1). As traffic congestion increases in metropolitan areas, electric scooters are mainly utilized for travel within the cities. These electric two-wheelers offer improved cost efficiency by achieving superior mileage relative to conventional ICE-powered two-wheelers. Firms like Ather and Ola have become key contenders in the electric two-wheeler sector, acquiring a significant portion of the market.

The valuation of the EV market is around US$ 8.03 billion in 2023, projected to reach USD 117.78 billion by 2032. India targets 30% electric vehicle adoption across all categories by 2030, aiming for 80 million EVs on the streets. Despite the global dominance of markets in the U.S., China, Germany, and the U.K., India’s EV growth is particularly notable. The market’s future depends on the types of EVs available, which include battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, each with varying emission reductions and efficiency. This diversity necessitates understanding different vehicle categories to assess their sustainability impact and technological readiness.

Renewable Energy in India
India’s energy demand is projected to rise more than any other country in the coming decades, driven by its large population and growth potential. To meet this surge sustainably, most of the additional demand must come from low-carbon, renewable sources. India’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2070 and 50% renewable electricity by 2030 marks a major global climate milestone. India is the market with the fastest growth in renewable electricity, and by 2026, new capacity additions are expected to double. India has officially surpassed Japan to become the world's third-largest solar energy producer. According to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India generated 1,08,494 GWh of solar power, exceeding Japan's 96,459 GWh.
Future of Renewable Energy in India
India has firmly established itself as a global powerhouse in clean energy, currently ranking third worldwide in renewable energy installed capacity. The nation crossed a historic threshold by achieving its Paris Agreement target of 50% non-fossil fuel installed capacity in October 2025—five years ahead of schedule.
By March 2026, India's non-fossil fuel capacity reached 283.46 GW, putting the country securely on track to achieve its ambitious target of 500 GW by 2030. The impact of this growing renewable energy capacity is already evident. During the summer of 2026, clean energy sources met more than 50% of the country's total electricity demand on multiple occasions, providing critical support to the power grid during prolonged heatwaves and periods of peak electricity demand.
The future of renewable energy in India is entering a transformative phase, driven by rapid innovation, large-scale adoption, and strong strategic initiatives across the energy sector. India’s clean energy transition is being supported by continuous investments in solar, wind, hybrid energy projects, as well as advancements in green hydrogen and energy storage solutions. Industry leaders, including Tata Power, are contributing to this evolving landscape by expanding renewable energy capacity and accelerating sustainable development.

Simultaneously, renewable-powered mobility, large-scale battery storage, and green hydrogen initiatives will play a pivotal role in supporting a resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem.
However, realizing these ambitions will require continued policy support, faster development of charging infrastructure, domestic battery manufacturing, grid modernization, and affordable clean technologies. Addressing these challenges through coordinated efforts by the government, industry, and research institutions will be essential to achieving India's targets of widespread EV adoption, 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, and net-zero emissions by 2070. Overall, India's integrated approach to electric mobility and renewable energy positions the country as a global leader in the transition toward a cleaner, greener, and more energy-secure future.
